How Proactive Cybersecurity Monitoring Stopped a Remote Access Scam

Most cybersecurity incidents don’t begin with sophisticated hacking. They begin with ordinary moments. Someone checks their personal email on a work computer. A familiar-looking website appears legitimate. A file gets downloaded without much thought because the day is already moving too fast. That’s why proactive cybersecurity monitoring matters. Good protection today is not just about blocking threats. It’s about recognizing unusual behavior quickly enough to stop a small mistake from becoming a much bigger problem.

Mind Your Children, Yourself & Your Stuff

Last summer, we took the grandkids out to Straitsmouth Island off Cape Ann to check out the keeper’s house and the lighthouse.

At the trail head above the landing, was a hand-painted sign that said:

“Mind Your Children, Yourself & Your Stuff.”

At the time, it just felt like a funny local sign.

But at lunch today, after dealing with a client security incident this morning, I saw the picture pop up on our digital frame at the office.

And it felt strangely relevant to cybersecurity.

This morning, a user at one of our client firms checked their personal email on their work computer, clicked what they believed was a legitimate Social Security-related link, and downloaded a remote access application called ScreenConnect.

Now here’s the part people miss: ScreenConnect itself is legitimate software.

IT providers use it every day for remote support.

But attackers use legitimate tools too.

Over the past month, we had already seen ScreenConnect appear in several suspicious situations across different environments. That pattern concerned us enough that we created a monitoring rule to immediately alert our team whenever it was installed unexpectedly.

That trip wire triggered at 10:41 this morning.

We were able to isolate the computer, remove the application, investigate the activity, and prevent access to the client network before the situation spread.

That’s what proactive cybersecurity monitoring is supposed to look like.

Not reacting after damage is done.

Catching unusual activity early enough to contain it quickly.

This is what many modern cyberattacks look like now: normal, familiar, and easy to trust for thirty seconds on a busy morning.

Why Modern Cybersecurity Looks Different

A lot of businesses still think cybersecurity is mainly about blocking viruses.

And to be clear, antivirus still matters.

But many modern attacks don’t look like traditional malware anymore.

They use:

  • legitimate software
  • familiar websites
  • real usernames and passwords
  • trusted brands and services

That’s what makes them effective.

The activity blends in with normal behavior.

And that’s where things tend to break.

Because someone is busy.
Distracted.
Trying to move quickly through their day.

That doesn’t make them careless.

It makes them human.

And unfortunately, human beings are exactly what these attacks are designed to exploit.

Why Layered Cybersecurity Protection Matters

The goal of modern cybersecurity is not to expect perfect decisions from every employee.

That’s not realistic.

The goal is to build layered cybersecurity protection that can recognize unusual behavior before a mistake turns into a business-wide problem.

That includes:

  • monitoring
  • endpoint protection
  • response automation
  • security policies
  • fast containment
  • visibility into what’s happening across systems

Because most businesses don’t get breached by one massive event.

They get breached through a series of small moments nobody noticed quickly enough.

In this case, the monitoring worked exactly the way it was supposed to.

The software was detected.

The system was isolated.

The risk was contained.

And the client’s operations kept moving.

That’s the difference between reactive IT and proactive cybersecurity monitoring.

The Better Question

Most firms your size already have some level of cybersecurity in place.

The better question is this: if somebody downloads a legitimate remote access tool onto a work computer tomorrow morning, who’s going to notice?

The sign on Straitsmouth Island said: “Mind Your Children, Yourself & Your Stuff.” That’s not bad cybersecurity advice either.
